I spent over 20 years in the financial services industry with the Federal Reserve Board, Citi and most recently with USAA where I was the Director of Underwriting Research. My passion for writing more homeowners insurance coverage in catastrophe-prone areas subject to hurricanes, flooding, tornados, hail, wildfire, earthquakes, tsunamis and lava flow profitably without putting the company at risk led me to meet with a lot of insurtech startups over the past 3-5 years. I was exposed to some incredible founders, technologists and thought leaders who were deploying new technologies in innovative ways to bring the staid P&C (non-life) insurance industry into the 21st century. As a result, I wanted to write a story about what is wrong with insurance today, why it has not been subject to the same forces of disruption as other industries (yet), what emerging technologies hold promise for eliminating part or all of the "fatal flaws" that insurance has and where the future of the industry is headed.
